“This exhibit explores the idea of creating multiple new artworks from one existing artwork. In my process, I work with a digital scan of a painting and modify it digitally to create a variety of new artworks. I experiment with composition, proportions, movement, rhythm and color, with the intention to create new engaging artworks.

The finished digital art is then printed on textured paper to bring the characteristics of the paint back to life, essentially creating an OFFSPRING of the original.

I like the idea of creating more from one because it reminds me to examine and appreciate what already exists and the potential it has.” - Christina Werkmeister

HOW IT STARTED

In 2019, Christina Werkmeister was working on a collage made of individual paint strokes. After applying the paint on black paper, she decided to scan them to create a digital mock-up. Christina used the scans in the Instagram Layout app and experimented with rotating, mirroring and replicating these paint strokes to create new images.

BACK TO PAPER

After recreating some of the Instagram posts in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, Christina soon began to work with high resolution scans in order to print on a larger scale. All of her digital artwork is printed on Epson Somerset Velvet, a heavy textured paper, that brings the characteristics and details of the paint back to life.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Kassel, Germany, home to the Documenta, a major international contemporary art exhibit, Christina was exposed to art at an early age. After attending the New York Film Academy in the summer of 1997, Christina decided to move to New York City. She earned a BA from the City University of New York, where she studied set design under Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt.

As production designer, Christina started painting during the production of the award winning independent film "Liar's Pendulum". Christina continued painting after the production was over but took a break when she enrolled in the Interior Architecture and Design MFA program at the Academy of Art University.

After researching Abstract Expressionism for another film project, Christina was inspired to pick up painting again. For one of her first interior design projects, Christina was commissioned to create a large piece of abstract concrete paintings. Since then, she has worked on abstract paintings, digital art prints and a variety of artworks in concrete and wood.

Christina’s work has been shown at art exhibits in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island, including Saatchi’s “The Other Art Fair” in Brooklyn. In addition, her art has been published in numerous digital publications.
